The second week of December, just after my birthday, I traveled to Williston, Florida, to take some riding lessons with Zoey. We went to Larry Poulin’s winter place. We know Larry from driving but he is also a very accomplished dressage rider. Our friends from Texas were also visiting with their Friesian crosses, which they have bred and raised specifically for driving. So it was fun to catch up with them outside of crazy show atmosphere.
This was the first time I have really ridden Zoey not at home. So, I was a little nervous. Mostly I worry about getting on! I am super short and not flexible. I have a giant stepladder that I use to mount. Well, if they were horrified by it, they hid it very well.
Zoey could feel that I was nervous the first day. Of course, we start picking at each other and she got very fussy. But, after regrouping, we ended up ok.
The second day, Larry rode her, which was kind of amusing, he is a bit tall for a 13.2 hand pony. However, Zoey got to work on her cantering, so that was good.
Zoey and I did better each of the three days we were there. We have to keep working on keeping a steady pace. I have to figure out how I can support her without impeding her. I am lacking in coordination!
We enjoyed sunny and 70 degree weather in Florida. Zoey was extra happy because she got to go out in a large paddock with grass! Zoey’s favorite activities definitely involve eating. Maybe it’s why we get along.
So back to Aiken we went, with lots to think about and practice. Not sure what our next outing will be! Overall, Larry was very positive about Zoey and her potential.
